When is a Dental Crown Needed?

When a tooth is extensively damaged by injury or decay, it may need a more comprehensive restoration than a dental filling. The Dental Crown Procedure

Before placing a crown, the affected tooth will be prepared by shaving it down to make room for the restoration. Next, an impression of your teeth is taken to create an accurate mold for the crown. Once the crown is manufactured, it is permanently bonded to the tooth.

Traditionally, patients would wear a temporary tooth cap while their permanent crown was being made, with the permanent crown cemented in place during a second appointment. However, many dental offices now use digital imaging and printing technology to manufacture crowns on-site, allowing the entire process to be completed in a single appointment.
